Just in time for some Christmas fun, in this workshop you will make Kokedama, the crafty botanical sensation from Japan!

Kokedama (苔玉, in Japanese) literally means "moss ball" and involves encasing soil in moss, then wrapping the moss with string or fabric. According to Tranquil Plants 'Kokedama, with its Japanese origins, embodies a practice where the act of cultivating plants is considered an art form and a source of meditative tranquility'. Similarly to the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui, Kokedama emphasizes the use of plants to balance 'chi', or energy flow, in the home and to attune with nature's rhythms.

We will start with a mindfulness exercise and will then immerse ourselves into the calming and therapeutic process of creating your own Kokedama, taking you away from the worries of the world, being present in the moment and enjoying the process of the perfect combination of nature and craft. You will get to choose a suitable plant and learn a failsafe technique to build up the root ball with a selection of suitable soils and learning how to wrap neatly with twine.

By the end of this workshop you will:

know how to make and care for Japanese kokedama
have made a kokedama for your home, or as a Christmas gift
be able to purchase plants and materials to make more kokedamas.
