ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKERS

NICK ROSE

Nick has been the Executive Director of Sustain since its establishment in January 2016. With a background In law and community development, Nick brings more than a decade of working at the grassroots and institutional level in several Australian states in food sovereignty and sustainable food systems. He is the editor of "Fair Food: Stories From a Movement Changing The World (2015)" and the co-editor of "Reclaiming The Urban Commons: The Past, Present and Future of Food Growing in Australian Towns And Cities (2018)." Nick is also a lecturer in food systems, food policy and governance and food movements for William Angliss Institute in their Bachelor of Food Studies and Master of Food Systems and Gastronomy.

LOU RIDSDALE

Presently, Lou works with Sustain, passionately delivering comms/digitals in a co-shared role of Digital Communications Event Coordinator. She is also Comms Manager at 15 Trees,a tree planting social enterprise encouraging individuals and businesses to foot the bill of tree and forestry regeneration.

In 2014 Lou Ridsdale set up Food Is Free Inc, with the Food Is Free Laneway beside her Ballarat home in an act of guerilla gardening inspired by the likes of Ron Finley and the USA Food Is Free movement. It utterly exploded, and Ballarat City Council granted her a wish of land over the road from the Laneway to establish the Food Is Free Green Space. The Laneway migrated over to the Green Space in mid 2023 when Loui moved house and is a much-loved food security education platform for those in need in her community, or those who just love fresh homegrown food. With 80 volunteers and 100 visitors daily, it has been featured on ABC Gardening Australia and Better Homes & Gardens. Lou loves anything to do with greenifying the planet, communicating sustainability, and community connections.
