The Backyard Farmers Project matches aspiring urban farmers and volunteers with people who wish to share their backyards for food growing, whilst fostering meaningful social connections. This project aims to develop regenerative farming capacity in urban communities and to support and enable a new generation of aspiring urban farmers.

Participants will be taken on a tour in Fawkner (address will be sent privately) to see the Growing Farmers model in operation and answer practical questions about how they operate, what they grow and why. We will finish the tour at Fawker Food Bowls where we will discuss how organisations are empowering local community and creating the myriad of connections that exist between grassroot food system organisations.

We will visit three of the total five farms, with an average walking time of 10 minutes. The tours will take place outside in the yards and are weather dependent. We ask visitors to wear appropriate clothings and carry a bottle of water.

This event will be carried out on the sacred lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung People. We pay our deepest respects to Ancestors for their ongoing care and custodianship of lands, waters and airways along Merri Merri, where we live and grow together.

Anyone interested in the urban food system will find something to be inspired by.
